A project has been launched to reduce maternal and child mortality in the southern region

The pilot project called "Safe Maternity" was presented in the city of Lankaran through the joint organization of the State Agency on Mandatory Health Insurance (Agency), the Administration of Regional Medical Divisions (TABIB), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). While presenting the project aimed at preventing maternal mortality in the southern region, representatives of the Agency, TABIB, Center for Public Health and Reforms, Scientific Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology, UNFPA, and the Lankaran Regional Central Hospital made speeches and provided information about the work to be done during the project. The speakers stressed the importance of the project in terms of protecting the reproductive health of the population.

The first phase of the project covers increasing capacity for medical workers engaged in the fields of birth and reproductive health. For this purpose, experts of UNFPA will conduct trainings for doctors and care personnel, specialized in obstetrics and gynecology at Lankaran Regional Central Hospital, Lankaran Regional Perinatal Center, and Family Health Centers.

During the three-stage project, there are plans to carry out various awareness raising events among the population on the important topics such as family planning, timely intervention in unwanted pregnancies, and pregnancy planning.

The project, which will continue until the end of 2023, also involves developing recommendations for the update of clinical protocols and methodological aids on the protection of maternal and child health. The goals are to reduce preventable maternal and child mortality and to implement the project in other regions of Azerbaijan.

It should be noted that, on June 21st of this year, a protocol of intent on cooperation was signed between the Agency and the UNFPA’s Azerbaijan representative office. According to the protocol, there are plans to develop cooperation between UNFPA and the Agency in the fields of improving family planning institutions in Azerbaijan and organizing joint activities for the resolution of reproductive health problems of the population.
