Seminar held for doctors on the topic of “Pregnant women and newborns during the COVID-19 pandemic”

On April 22, 2022, a seminar held for doctors with joint organizational support of the State Agency on Mandatory Health Insurance (Agency), Azerbaijan Office of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Administration on the Regional Medical Divisions (TABIB) and Republican Clinical Hospital named after academician M.A.Mirgasimov.

Over 50 doctors specializing in pediatrics, neonatology, and infectious diseases attended the seminar on the topic of “Pregnant women and newborns during the COVID-19 pandemic” to improve their skills and knowledge.

In his opening speech, Azar Ismayilov, the Director of the Republican Clinical Hospital spoke about measures taken against COVID-19 infection disease and work undertaken to reduce the negative impact of the pandemic on the country's economy.

He said that doctors and medical workers have demonstrated strong commitment in the fight against coronavirus. A. Ismayilov added that such events, which bring healthcare workers together, also allow doctors to exchange views on various medical innovations and share their experiences with others.

Afterwards, Moon Jong Hyun, the Director of KOICA Azerbaijan Office expressed his satisfaction with the fruitful cooperation with healthcare institutions in Azerbaijan. It was noted that the sharing of experience of countries specializing in the prevention of infection with other countries during the pandemic is very important in the fight against coronavirus. He said that during the pandemic, KOICA regularly organized online seminars for doctors and nursing staff on the fight against coronavirus.

Afterwards, the member of Health Committee of Milli Majlis (Parliament) Ilham Mammadov, Advisor to the Chairman of the Board of TABIB Elmir Bashirov and Head of Healthcare Management Department Teymur Mirzabeyli addressed the event.

The seminar was attended by the doctors of the City Clinical Hospital № 3, the Republican Perinatal Center, Clinical Medical Center, Scientific Research Institute of Pediatrics named after K.Farajova, Scientific Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology and other healthcare facilities.

The doctors made presentations on the topic of “Teratogenic effects of COVID-19 infection on the fetus”, “Clinical course of COVID-19 in pregnant women”, “Fetoplacental changes in the pregnant woman after recovering from COVID-19”, “Questions and answers related with COVID-19 infection during pregnancy”, “Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in newborns (MIS-N)”, “Our approach to pregnant women during pandemic”, “Thrombotic complications of COVID-19 in pregnancy”, “The impact of COVID-19 infection on pregnancy and fetus” and “Feeding of newborns of mothers recovered from COVID-19”.

It should be noted that the seminar was held as part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Agency and KOICA on April 4 this year. Memorandum of Understanding outlines the strengthening of response measures against COVID-19 pandemic in Azerbaijan.

One of the scopes of MoU is to organize public awareness campaign about health of pregnant women and newborns during COVID-19 pandemic.
