The "Virtual School of Diabetes" project was introduced

On December 8th, 2021, at the initiative of the State Agency on Mandatory Health Insurance (Agency) and with the support of the Novo Nordisk company, the presentation of the project "Virtual School of Diabetes " was held. The online platform, designed to raise awareness among the population about prevention and treatment of diabetes, was demonstrated at the event.

Zaur Aliyev, Chairman of the Board of the Agency, Emil Larsen, Corporate Vice President for the Middle East, Africa and CIS of the Novo Nordisk company, Danny Annan, Ambassador of Denmark, Ahliman Amiraslanov, Chairman of the Healthcare Committee of the Parliament, Soltan Mammadov, Head of the International Relations Department of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and representatives of other government agencies, embassies, international and non-governmental organizations attended the ceremony.

Opening the event, Zaur Aliyev said that more than 270,000 people in the country suffered from diabetes and the state had taken important measures to combat diabetes. Currently, the relevant medical services related to diabetes were provided within the Benefit Package of mandatory health insurance and treatment for neonatal diabetes mellitus, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, many specific and unspecified complications of diabetes and other medical services were provided in an inpatient setting.

Emil Larsen spoke about the priorities of the project: “The platform introduced today is designed to make it easier for patients and their caregivers to control diabetes, carry out treatment and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Providing patients with modern electronic devices that are easy to use and convenient will help to raise awareness about diabetes, as well as save time for doctors.”

In his speech, Danny Annan stressed the importance of cooperation between international, public and private institutions: “It is very important to strengthen the cooperation between various institutions to improve the quality of life of people with diabetes. The project introduced is a clear example of such cooperation”.

After the demonstration of the video dedicated to patients with diabetes, Ahliman Amiraslanov spoke about the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan defining the organizational and legal basis of state care for people with diabetes: "The Law on State Care for People with Diabetes" regulates relations in the field of prevention and treatment of diabetes and creates the basis for taking important measures for the treatment of people suffering from diabetes”.

 “The highest care for children with diabetes" implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation since 2004. Within the project, initiated by Mehriban Aliyeva, the President of the Foundation, regular assistance is provided to supply insulin preparations and insulin injection pens for children suffering from diabetes. Also, with the support of the Foundation, psychosocial rehabilitation is provided for children suffering from diabetes and who need social care” – said Soltan Mammadov.

The event ended with the demonstration of the video about the platform, Virtual School of Diabetes, the providing of information about the project and a discussion of the first impressions of the platform.

It should be noted that on January 15th, 2021, the Agency and Novo Nordisk company signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the "Virtual School of Diabetes" project. The main goal of the project is to draw public attention to the fight against diabetes in the country, and to educate the population in this area and encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle.
