A Memorandum of Understanding on the project of Virtual School of Diabetes was signed

On January 15, 2021, an online signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding on the "Virtual School of Diabetes" project was held between the State Agency on Mandatory Health Insurance (Agency) and the Novo Nordisk company. The memorandum was signed by Zaur Aliyev, Chairman of the Board of the Agency, and Gulshaba Abbasova, Manager of the Novo Nordisk company in Azerbaijan.

The main goal of the project is to draw public attention to the fight against diabetes in the country and to propagandize a healthy lifestyle among the population by educating them in this area.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Novo Nordisk company, the Agency, and the Administration of the Regional Medical Divisions.

Welcoming the guests, the Chairman of the Board of the Agency said that diabetes is one of the most widespread diseases in the 21st century: “Every year, 11.3% of global deaths are caused by diabetes. The number of registered diabetics in our country is 272,000. 1,850 of them are children.” He said the increasing numbers with more diabetes-related complications put a heavy financial burden to the state budget in the context of universal health coverage: “Costs associated with the disease can be significantly reduced by taking initial preventive measures and raising public awareness. In this regard, the Memorandum of Understanding creates new opportunities for us to reverse the negative  trend through our joint efforts.”

In turn, Emil Larsen, Corporate Vice President of the company Novo Nordisk, said that Novo Nordisk, which has a history of more than 95 years, operates in 75 countries around the world. Since 1998, the company has been partnering with Azerbaijan: "Currently, 30 million diabetics in 170 countries use the products of the company, thus the company supplies nearly 50% of the world’s insulin demand."

Then the experts reported on the activities of Novo Nordisk in Azerbaijan and the benefits of the project for Azerbaijan.
