A training program was held for medical workers involved in the fight against infectious diseases in the northern regions of the country

On July 30, the State Agency on Mandatory Health Insurance (Agency), the Azerbaijani Representative Office of the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the KOICA Azerbaijani Alumni Association (KOAZ) organized a training session on COVID-19 infection for medical workers of country’s northern regions in Gusar.

Medical staff from the central hospitals of Guba, Gusar, and Khachmaz regions and the Guba Medical-Diagnostic Center, who took part in the fight against infectious diseases, were involved in the training on "Strengthening Readiness and Response to Coronavirus Across Azerbaijan."

KOAZ graduates Ramil Almammedov and Hokuma Mammadova spoke as trainers at the event, sharing the Korean experience and their knowledge and skills in the fight against COVID-19 with health workers. It should be stated, that both trainers participated in the course "Improving the knowledge and skills of medical professionals on infectious diseases: the use of COVID-19 test kit" organized by KOICA and Yonsei University of the Republic of Korea on July 14-27, 2020.

The training program prepared by KOAZ graduates includes the following presentations: “COVID-19 infection - disease management, prevention, clinical characteristics”, “Effect of COVID-19 infection on the immune system and mitochondrial dynamics in diabetes, obesity and dementia” and “Existing and innovative methods for the diagnosis of COVID 19 infection”.

Representative of the Executive Authority of the Gusar region Telman Kazimov, Moon Jong Hyun, Director of the KOICA Azerbaijan Office, Ruslan Abdullayev, Head of the International Cooperation Division of the Agency and Nargiz Hajiyeva, Coordinator of the Department of Citizens' Appeals and Documents also spoke at the event.

The representative of the Agency, Ruslan Abdullayev, noted that the support provided to our country by the Republic of Korea, one of the countries specialized in the prevention of the coronavirus infection, was commendable. He stated that the Korean government had donated 350,000 protective masks and 3 COVID-19 Test Cabins to Azerbaijan as a sign of its support to Azerbaijan during the pandemic. Also, regular trainings and meetings had been organized by the Agency and KOICA in order to share the experience of Korea in the fight against COVID-19 with the medical workers of Azerbaijan.

Moon Jong Hyun, Director of the KOICA Azerbaijan Office stressed that along with medical services, social activity is an important factor in overcoming the coronavirus pandemic. He wished success to the participants at the event and noted that KOICA would continue to support the process of combating the coronavirus infection.

Speaking at the event, the representative of the Executive Authority of the Gusar region Telman Kazimov provided detailed information about the preventive measures taken by the Executive Authority to protect the health of the population during the pandemic. According to him, currently 33% of the population in Gusar region had been vaccinated and 13 permanent vaccination centers have been established in the region to organize the vaccination process.

The representative of the Agency Nargiz Hajiyeva said that the training, organized in the northern part of the country, was part of the Agency's awareness-raising activities carried out during the pandemic, and it was important to improve the knowledge and skills of health workers in the fight against coronavirus. Hajiyeva added that vaccination is the most effective way of fighting the coronavirus infection: "The role of health workers in raising public awareness about the importance of vaccination is great."
