Hysterectomy, the surgical removal of the uterus, is performed free of charge under mandatory health insurance. From 2022 to the first four months of 2024, a total of 13,250 hysterectomy operations were carried out under this insurance coverage.
Hysterectomy is indicated in several conditions, including uterine fibroids, persistent uterine bleeding unresponsive to treatment, endometriosis (a condition affecting the inner lining of the uterus), trauma to the uterus during pregnancy or childbirth, and cervical cancer. The procedure is especially crucial for patients with uterine or ovarian cancer to prevent the disease from progressing to severe complications. The surgery can be performed using laparoscopic, abdominal, or vaginal methods, with the choice of technique depending on the type and stage of the disease.
Laparoscopic hysterectomy is performed through small incisions in the abdominal cavity, abdominal hysterectomy is conducted through an open incision in the abdomen, vaginal hysterectomy is executed through an incision made in the upper part of the vagina. A specialized doctor will prescribe the most appropriate method based on the patient's condition.
To detect pathological changes in the uterus early, diagnostic tests such as HPV testing (Human Papillomavirus), Pap smear (cervical smear and microscopy), ultrasound (USM), X-ray, hysteroscopy, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cystoscopy, and colonoscopy are covered under mandatory health insurance. Additionally, if pathological changes are suspected, a biopsy of the cervix and histological examination of the collected material are also covered.
Mandatory health insurance includes coverage for instrumental and laboratory examinations performed in both outpatient and inpatient settings, resuscitation, inpatient hospitalization, medications, medical supplies, and blood or blood components during hospitalization and surgery.
The duration of a hysterectomy operation varies depending on the reason for the surgery but typically lasts between 1 and 3 hours. Hysterectomies are performed under mandatory health insurance in state medical facilities supervised by TABIB, as well as in the Scientific Research Institutes of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan, upon a doctor's prescription.
