Vitrectomy surgery, one of the most effective modern ophthalmological treatments for retinal and vitreous disorders, is covered by mandatory health insurance. Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the partial or complete removal of the vitreous body. This surgical procedure can restore vision or prevent further deterioration. During the first six months of this year, over 700 vitrectomy surgeries were performed under compulsory health insurance.
In cases of severe vision loss, narrowing of the visual field, the appearance of a veil, black spots, shadows or flashes before the eyes, or eye trauma, it is advised to consult an ophthalmologist immediately. Ophthalmological examinations help detect pathologies in the posterior segment of the eye, including the retina and vitreous body. Covered by compulsory health insurance, these examinations include ophthalmoscopy, optical coherence tomography (OCT - a non-invasive imaging technique using infrared light), ultrasound of the eyeball, eye angiography, and visual acuity tests. If these diagnostic methods detect retinal detachments, hemophthalmos (intravitreal hemorrhages), diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, epiretinal fibrosis, eye trauma, or other pathologies, vitrectomy is recommended.
The surgery is performed using microinvasive techniques, usually under local anesthesia. The duration of the surgery depends on the underlying condition and any accompanying ophthalmological pathologies, typically lasting between 1 and 3 hours. During the surgery, the vitreous body is removed, and the resulting cavity is filled with a balanced salt solution, artificial polymers: silicone oil or gas. These substances expand within the eye cavity, helping to restore the retina to its normal position and maintain its stability. It should be noted that medications and medical expenses during inpatient care are also covered under the compulsory health insurance benefit package. After vitrectomy, patients can resume their normal activities within a short period.
Vitrectomy surgery covered by compulsory health insurance is performed by referral at medical institutions (both private and state-affiliated), that have a contract with the State Agency on Mandatory Health Insurance, based on medical indications and a doctor’s prescription.
